Walking With Others

For many, walking can be more fun when it's done in pairs or groups. Instead of it being just an exercise activity, walking becomes an enjoyable social event as well. As a rule, walking in pairs is easier to coordinate than walking in groups. Often couples or friends will walk together. In some areas there are walking clubs that facilitate matching up people for walking groups.

To maximize the pleasure of walking with others, it is essential that everyone is able to walk at the same pace because It can be frustrating for all concerned when fellow walkers' capabilities are not in-synch. It is also important that fellow walkers enjoy walking in the same places and at the same time of day.

walking indoors Well-matched walking partners can motivate each other and help each other to improve. They watch out for each other without supervising and push one another a little without nagging. Their social interactions can certainly be a healthy distraction on longer walks. In the event of injury or sudden illness while walking, having others along is definitely an advantage.

Perhaps the best determinant of a predisposition to walking with others is whether you are extroverted or introverted. Introverts are more likely to prefer their own company to that of others, and thus are more inclined to prefer solitary walking. Extreme extroverts usually do not gravitate to solitary activities, so if they walk at all it is almost always with company, and the more the better.

When introverts do walk with others, two scenarios are common: walking with other introverts in companionable silence, and walking with people with whom they share a strong common interest. The latter is because a defining characteristic of introverts is that they have fewer interests than extroverts, but they are passionate about the ones they have and enjoy talking at length about them with kindred spirits.

More moderated extroverts may find walking by themselves a struggle, but they can do it when motivated. However, they would much prefer walking with a least one other person.
