Naked Walking

Naked walking or free hiking is generally practiced in nude-tolerant locales by naturists who are outdoors enthusiasts. Historically naturism has been an activity engaged in within confined, private areas such as landed clubs or designated beaches, but in recent years it has spread to more public spaces. Naturists have always been interested in health and fitness. Facilities usually feature amenities like volleyball courts and ping pong tables, yet their limited area inhibits hiking, running or cycling naked.

walking 101Nude hikers try not to offend people or draw attention to themselves. To this end they avoid densely populated areas and mostly walk in remote mountain areas, forests, woods, and fields where there is little liklihood of meeting other hikers, e.g. in isolated wilderness territories. Many naked hikers report friendly reactions from people they meet during their treks, however the risk of being arrested for public indecency (an issue that varies between countries and jurisdictions) is often present when hiking in the nude, so they try to keep away from population centers where practical.

Commonly naked hikers wear some articles of clothing for comfort or safety depending upon the environment and time of year. For example, they might choose to go barefoot on the beach, but wear hiking boots in the mountains. Sunstroke or sunburn is a danger with any outdoor activity, naked or not, and since naked hiking exposes the body to an increased amount of sunshine, those who indulge in this outdoor activity sometimes find it advisable to use sunscreen and sun hats.

naked walkingThere are some special challenges to naked walking. Insects, such as mosquitoes and midges, can be particularly troublesome, especially to sensitive parts of the body. Therefore, in certain situations insect repellents are a necessity for participants in this activity. Also, walking through stinging nettles, poison oak, high thistles and the like can be a painful experience for anyone, but extra care must be taken when walking sans clothing.

Naked treadmill walking is a related and probably more common variation of naked walking. Usually naked treadmill walking is limited to people who have access to a treadmill located in a private setting, although there are a few commercial gyms that endorse exercising au naturel. Whereas naked treadmill walking doesn't provide the opportunity to commune with nature, it does allow the walker to enjoy a sense of freedom while indulging in a healthful activity. An advantage of naked treadmill walking is that it eliminates the downsides of outdoor naked walking; notably, offending fellow hikers, running afoul of the law, incurring UV damage, and enduring painful encounters with insects and defensive plantlife.
